Summary:The furnace comprises a shaft with a charging door in a side wall. A metal ring in the shaft below the door constitutes a lining and is suspended on chains. Loose material, e.g. sand slag, fills the space between the lining and the furnace wall. Holes in the furnace wall below the ring let air into the shaft to cool the ring. Each air suction hole pref. has an adjustable flap for air flow control.
