The invention relates to a method and a device for controlling an internal combustion engine comprising an electronic control device for injecting or/and igniting. Exhaust gas from a waste gas line is introduced into the cylinders of an internal combustion engine. At least one lambda value is detected by at least one sensor and is assigned to a cylinder. A manipulated variable for acontrol element can be established by comparing the current value and a setpoint value, thereby influencing the proportion of exhaust gas reintroduced. Es werden ein Verfahren und eine Vorrichtung zur Steuerung einer Brennkraftmaschine mit einem elektronischen Steuergerät für Einspritzung oder/und Zündung beschrieben. Den Zylindern der Brennkraftmaschine wird Abgas aus einer Abgasleitung zugeführt. Mittels wenigstens eines Sensors wird wenigstens ein Lambdawert, der einem Zylinder zugeordnet ist, ermittelt. Ausgehend von einem Vergleich zwischen dem Istwert und einem Sollwert ist eine Stellgröße für ein Stellglied vorgebbar, das den Anteil an rückgeführtem Abgas beeinflußt.
