Production of trioxane comprises trimerization of gaseous formaldehyde (HCHO) containing little water in a heterogeneously catalyzed gas phase reaction, using a solid phosphoric acid catalyst. Independent claims are also included for: (a) the use of solid phosphoric acid catalysts for trimerization of HCHO; (b) an integrated process, comprising non-oxidative dehydrogenation of methanol, optional purification of the crude HCHO, g phase trimerization over a solid phosphoric acid catalyst and separation of trioxane from unreacted HCHO, which is recycled to t trimerization stage. |
