PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure certainty for control operation of an internal combustion engine, even in case of an error by maintaining the desired limitation of revolving speed without a shut-off of the fuel supply. SOLUTION: A method and device for controlling an internal combustion engine is structured, so that the torque of the internal combustion engine is set as a function desired by a driver, and the revolving speed of the engine is measured and limited to a prescribed value, wherein a limitation controller is installed to limit the engine speed to the prescribed monitor revolving speed. First, the limitation controller reduces the torque through engagement with the air supply and/or ignition and/or fuel supply to the engine, the engine speed is limited to the monitor revolving speed, and in addition completely shuts off the fuel supply to at least one cylinder of the engine when at least one specific error case exists.
