Summary:The losses in erthromycin (1) production arises from de-activation due to the fact that the most favourable pH for extraction lies within the range of pH for low stability and deactivation of the antibiotic. This is avoided by pptg. I from the clarified culture fluid as a salt with a polybasic organic acid viz. oxalic acid in MeOH soln. The salt has unlimited stability to storage, is transportable and re-convertible to the base with alkali.
