The proposal is for a device and process for setting valve lift, especially that of an injection valve needle of an internal combustion engine, in which a preset valve seat in a housing of the valve (20) can move axially in the housing through plastic deformation. The device has a displacement device (50), which generates a feed movement for a crushing tool (53, 55) in the direction of plastic deformation, and a measuring instrument (30) which determines the valve travel adjustable by the plastic deformation of the valve seat and compares it with a predetermined reference, whereby the displacement device (50) can be controlled via the reference/actual value comparison. The crushing tool (53, 55) is set in a first and, where appropriate, with at least one other feed process. In a learning phase, from the values attained through the first feed process, a characteristic is formed from which a further feed movement for the subsequent feed process is determined.
