Summary:1,266,661. Condensation products of addition polymers. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 26 June, 1970 [26 July, 1969], No. 31039/70. Heading C3P. Condensation products are produced by a process wherein a copolymer, or polymers of (A) 1-20% by weight of an α-halogenoalkyl ester of formula wherein R is H or -CH 3 , R1 is H, -CH 3 or -C 2 H 5 and X is Cl or Br, (B) 99 to 30% by weight of one or more elasticizing monomers, (C) 0-69% by weight of one or more olefinically unsaturated compounds which are free from carboxyl, hydroxyl, primary, secondary or tertiary amino, or amide groups, and which are different from monomers (B), and (D) 0-69% by weight of one or more olefinically unsaturated compounds containing at least one of the groups specified not to be present in (C), the sum of A to C or D always being 100%, are subjected to a condensation reaction either alone (when monomer D is used) or with ammonia, hydrazine or a compound containing one or more of the groups specified in (C) (when monomer (D) is not used), at a pH of at least 7. In the condensation, the functional groups in monomer (D) (when it is used) or the compound containing such groups (when (D) is not used), react with the halogen atom in the chloroalkyl ester group of monomer (A). The condensation is preferably carried out in the presence of a base and at 0-250‹ C. Elasticizing monomer (B) may be for example a C 1-20 alkyl ester of acrylic acid, a C 4-20 alkyl ester of methacrylic acid or a C 4-6 conjugated diene. Monomer (C) may be, for example, a C 1-3 alkyl ester of methacrylic acid, a nitrile of a 6 3-5 α.#-unsaturated carboxylic acid, a vinyl, vinylidene, divinyl or divinylidene compound other than those used as the other monomers, or a C 2-10 α-mono olefin. Monomer (D) may be, for example, a C 3-5 α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acid, an amide or N-methylolamide thereof, an aminoalkyl ester or amide thereof, or a C 3-18 olefinically unsaturated alcohol. Many examples of compounds used if monomer (D) is absent, are listed. The product may be derived from a mixture of a copolymer of (B), (C) and/or (D), and a polymer of (A).
