Summary:1,272,702. Catalyst for preparation of polyesters. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 8 July, 1970 [9 July, 1969], No. 33177/70. Heading C3R. A linear saturated polyester suitable for injection moulding which is a polyester of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, optionally mixed with up to 10% by weight, calculated on the combined diacids, of an aliphatic diacid and a saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diol, is obtained by the use of a manganese dicarboxylate, (RCOO) 2 Mn, as the transesterification catalyst, where R is a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, aromatic or aromatic-aliphatic radical containing 2 to 19 carbon atoms, an epoxy group and also optionally one or more ether linkages. Examples 1 and 2 describe the preparation of polyethyleneterephthalate using manganese 9, 10-epoxystearate or manganese 10,11-epoxyundecylenate as the transesterification catalyst in a conventional preparative procedure, including a solid-phase polymerization step. The manganese compound may also serve as polycondensation catalyst, or other catalysts, e.g. Sb 2 O 3 , GeO 2 or GeHPO 3 , may be added for this step. Crystallization promoters, e.g. finely divided inorganic solids, may also be added either during the polycondensation step or to the resulting polyester.
