[Also in Division C2] Vinyl chloride is polymerized using as initiator an organic peroxide of formula where R is an organic radical having up to 20 carbon atoms provided that the atom bonded directly to the adjacent carbonyl group is free from halogen substitution, each of X and Y is a chlorine, bromine, or hydrogen atom provided at least one of X and Y is a chlorine or bromine atom, and n is a positive integer from 1 to 18. Specified peroxides are acetyl 2-chloro-butyryl, acetyl 2-chlorodecanoyl, acetyl 2-bromo-butyryl, acetyl -2-bromohexadecanoyl, and m-chlorobenzyl 2-chloro-butyryl, peroxides.
