Summary:1,229,624. Counting-apparatus. A. O. SMITH CORP. 10 May, 1968 [24 May, 1967], No. 22366/68. Heading G4D. A preset counter for use with a fuel-dispensing apparatus has its transfer mechanism uncoupled when dispensing is complete. Before a dispensing operation a control ring 7 in the base of the counter has a cam (52) (Fig. 5, not shown) underlying a rod 50 so as to maintain a comb 46 in raised position, and therefore a set of tens transfer pawls 43 in inoperative position. In this condition the numeral wheels can be preset individually by push rods 4. Each operation of a rod 4 causes its associated pawl 57 to rock counter-clockwise so that its tip 59 engages ratchet wheel 27 to step the associated numeral wheel. When the counter is set to the required value the flow valve is opened, turning the control ring 7 to the position shown in Fig. 2 and so enabling the transfer mechanism. The flowmeter drives the counter subtractively via 15, 22, 23, 24, 25, spring-pressed pawls 29 and internal ratchet 28 on the units wheel. A cam 38 lifts a follower 42 which falls at transfer, Fig. 4, so that spring-pressed pawl 43 drives the ratchet wheel 27 of higher order. When all the higher order wheels have been returned to zero the comb 46 meets flats on cams 61 and falls, so permitting a units feeler 37, Fig. 3, to fall momentarily. The oscillation of the feeler 37 allows the control ring 7 to make one step counter-clockwise before being caught again by latch 75. The ring 7 acts through rod 8 to half-shut the flow-valve. When the units wheel also returns to zero feeler 37 falls into notch 36 and the control ring 7 makes a further step to shut the valve and disable the transfer mechanism again. Flow can be stopped in an emergency by pushing rod 6 which acts through lever 84 to disable latch 75 and return control ring 7 to stop position. A total meter is provided.
