Summary:<FORM:1121312/C2/1> <FORM:1121312/C2/2> 1 - (5 - Nitrofurfurylidene - amino) - hydantoins (some of which are novel) having the Formula (I), in which R is C1- 8 alkyl, C2- 6 alkenyl, C1- 6 alkoxy-carbonyl, C5- 8 cycloalkyl, phenyl, phenyl carrying one or two C1- 6 alkyl substituents or phenyl-C1- 6 alkyl, are prepared by effecting ring closure of a compound of Formula (II), in which R1 is a hydrocarbon group, by treatment with a strong mineral acid. The novel hydantoins are those in which R is C1- 4 alkyl or cyclohexyl. Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-bacterial and, when R is butyl, fungistatic properties, for oral administration, comprise a compound of Formula (I) with a carrier.
