Summary:Lubricant compositions contain a copolymer of an olefin containing at most 6 carbon atoms per molecule with an alkyl ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid and an ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid in which the part of the molecule derived from the alcohol contains at least one free hydroxyl group. In the examples, copolymers of ethylene, lauryl methacrylate (optionally together with stearyl methacrylate) and methacrylic acid are produced in solution in benzene and tert-butanol using azodiisobutyronitrile as catalyst. The copolymers are esterified with ethylene oxide to produce ethylene/lauryl methacrylate/b -hydroxyethyl methacrylate and ethylene/lauryl methacrylate/stearyl methacrylate/b -hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymers.ALSO:A lubricant composition contains a lubricant and a copolymer of an olefin containing at most 6 carbon atoms per molecule with an alkyl ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid and an ester of an unsaturated carboxylic acid in which the part of the molecule derived from the alcohol contains at least one free hydroxyl group. In the examples, copolymers of ethylene, lauryl methacrylate and b -hydroxyethyl methacrylate and of these three monomers together with stearyl methacrylate are employed.
