A floating barrier comprising strips 1, 1 of waterproof material joined together at their ends by removable parts 4 and having affixed thereto floats 2 (which may be on one or both sides of the barrier and may be horizontal) arranged so that the strips are partly submerged with their surfaces vertical, is used with apparatus to suck off the surface layer (which may be oil, light waste matter or other immiscible or floating matter). The apparatus may comprise a floating suction head 11, 12 connected by tubes 16 and 17 (which may be carried by spring clips on the barrier) to a suction pump on an adjacent ship or quay. The barrier may be anchored or have weights attached to its lower-edge, e.g. by ties 5. |
