Summary:A method of strengthening a collagenous product comprises treating it with a polysaccharide derivative having a plurality of aldehydic groups in its molecule. The derivative may be dialdehyde alginic acid, dialdehyde pectic acid, dialdehyde gum arabic or dialdehyde gum tragacanth. Dialdehyde alginic acid is prepared by dispersing alginic acid in water containing iodic acid followed by electrolytic oxidation, centrifugation and dialysis.ALSO:Alginic acid is converted to dialdehyde alginic acid, typically of molecular weight above 1000, by dispersion electrolytic oxidation of a dispersion of it in water containing iodic acid. In two examples, 6 amps for 8 hours, and 10 amps for 18 minutes are used.
