Summary:1,201,044. Laminates. KAISER ALUMINUM & CHEMICAL CORP. 1 Nov., 1967 [7 Nov., 1966]; No. 49736/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Division C3] A laminated article includes a metallic layer, a layer of foamed resinous material and an intermediate semi-elastomeric layer, comprising an admixture of inert, particulate material lying within an adhesive mass, interposed between and securing the metallic and foamed layers together, the adhesive mass of the semi-elastomeric layer comprising an epoxy or polystyrene resin or a polyurethane which is the reaction product of a polyol and an organic polyisocyanate and the particulate material of the semi-elastomeric layer being of greater hardness than the adhesive mass, the over-all impact and dent resistance of the metallic layer being greater than that of the metallic layer by itself. The metallic layer is preferably aluminium or an aluminium alloy. The resinous material of the foam layer may comprise polyester, polyvinyl, polystyrene, phenolic, polyurethane or epoxy resins, silicones (polysiloxanes), natural or synthetic rubber materials. Preferred polyurethane resins are prepared from polymethylene polyphenylene isocyanates reacted with polyols obtained from reacting ethylene oxide or propylene oxide with water, sucrose, trimethylolpropane, pentaerythritol or sorbitol. The polyol may contain phosphorus. The inert particulate material may be sand or alumina. In a preferred embodiment the metallic layer is of non- planar configuration whilst a further metallic layer, which may be non-planar, may be bonded to the outer side of the foamed layer.
