Summary:1,166,227. Foamed plastics. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 22 Feb., 1968 [28 Feb., 1967], No. 8580/68. Headings C3C and C3R. Foamed plastics are prepared by reacting (a) compounds containing hydrogen atoms which are reactive to isocyanates, (b) polyisocyanates and (c) water as a blowing agent, the foaming taking place in the presence of compounds which have at least one aziridine ring in which the nitrogen atom is attached to a methylene group which may be alkylated or arylated, and in the case in which a compound containing only one aziridine ring is used, there is at least one hydrogen atom in the molecule which will react with isocyanate groups. The process may be carried out by (i) reacting all the components together simultaneously, (ii) reacting the reactive hydrogen containing compound (a) with excess polyisocyanate (b) to form a prepolymer which may then be reacted simultaneously or successively with the other reactants, (iii) reacting the prepolymer described in (ii) with aziridines which contain reactive hydrogen atoms, if desired in admixture with a further quantity of a compound which contains reactive hydrogen atoms to form polyaziridine compounds, which can then be foamed with polyisocyanates and water. The foaming may be carried out in the presence of compounds which catalytically accelerate the opening of the aziridine ring. Particularly suitable are alkanesultones and/or aryl sulphonic acid alkyl esters which compounds also act as quaternizing agents. Suitable compounds (a) are polyesters and polyethers. The polyisocyanate (b) is preferably an aliphatic or aromatic diisocyanate Suitable aziridine ring-containing compounds are those of the general formula in which R is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radical, R1 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or aryl radical in which two groups R1 can be joined together to form a ring, A is -(CR 2 )- or a bifunctional organic radical which is linked to the aziridine nitrogen atom via -(CR 2 )-, those of the general formula wherein R1 and A are as defined above, addition products of 1,2-alkylene oxides with aziridines of the formula addition products of the aziridines of Formula II to hydroxyalkyl esters of α,#-unsaturated carboxylic acids, addition products of aziridines to α,#-unsaturated carboxylic esters of polyhydric alcohols, polyaziridines which have been prepared by addition of aziridines to polyesters of α,#-unsaturated dicarboxylic acids and polyhydric alcohols and polyaziridines prepared by addition of aziridines of the general Formula II to polymers obtained by epoxide polymerization of compounds of formula or to the condensation product of the general formula
