A hole is formed by electro-erosion in a workpiece 324 by rotating the latter about an axis 326 and moving an inclined electrode 78 along a parallel axis into the workpiece. The electrode 78 is of wire taken from a reel 76 mounted on a carriage 40 which is reciprocated under the control of limit switches as described in Specification 1,165,888. The tip of the electrode is set initially by a gauge 346 on an adjustable support 348.
