The signal delay tube of the parent Specification is modified, to reduce insertion loss by the drift space section, by arranging that the drift space is in a transverse magnetic field having a strength different from that in which the delay line section lies, such that the cyclotron wavelength in the drift space is substantially equal to the middle wavelength of the pass-band of the tube. The variation of transverse magnetic field is achieved by the use of polepieces which have projections facing the drift space, for the case of operation in the forward mode, or troughs facing the drift space for operation in the backward mode.
