Summary: | Polyesters are made by polymerizing a lactone having three or at least five carbon atoms in the ring and which has been purified by distillation over an organic isocyanate using as a catalyst a mixture of an aluminium compound having at least one aluminium-to-carbon bond and water in an amount of from 0.1 to 2 mols. per mol. of aluminium compound. Specified lactones are beta-propiolactone, delta-valerolactone and epsilon-caprolactone. Specified aluminium compounds are aluminium trimethyl, aluminium triethyl, aluminium triphenyl, diisobutyl aluminium hydride, aluminium diethyl monochloride, aluminium monoethyl dichloride and aluminium diisopropyl monoisopropoxide. Polymerization may be effected in solution, suspension or bulk. The polyesters are soluble in benzene, toluene, chloroform and dioxane and may be used in the manufacture of lacquers, films and threads. |
