Summary:Tetracycline is produced by cultivating a tetracycline- and chlortetracycline-producing strain of a species of Streptomyces in a conventional aqueous medium containing as chlorination inhibitor a 1,2,4-triazine of formula <FORM:1073047/C2/1> wherein X is hydrogen or C1- 6 alkyl; Z is hydrogen, C1- 6 alkyl, C1- 6 alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, -CH=CH.C6H5, -(CH2)nCOOH or -(CH2)n CONH2 where n = 0 to 7; Y is H, C1- 6 alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, -OH, -SH or NH2. Specified compounds are 3-methylmercapto-5-hydroxy- 6 - benzyl - 1,2,4 - triazine, 3 - mercapto - 5 - hydroxy - 1,2,4 - triazine, 3 - mercapto - 5 - hydroxy - 6 - carboxy - 1,2,4 - triazine, 3 - mercapto - 5 - hydroxy - 6 - carboxamido - 1,2,4 - triazine, beta - (3 - mercapto- 5 - hydroxy - 1,2,4 - triazine - 6 -) propionic acid, 3 - mercapto - 5,6 - diphenyl - 1,2,4 - triazine, 3 - mercapto - 5 - hydroxy - 6 - methyl-1,2,4 - triazine and 3 - mercapto - 5 - hydroxy- 6 - benzyl - 1,2,4 - triazine. The cultivation may also take place in the presence of bromine ions.
