Summary: | 1,030,126. Polyolefin filaments. G. SHAW, and J. C. LEWIS. Oct. 11, 1963 [Oct. 19, 1962], No. 40285/63. Heading B5B. Unoriented polyolefin filaments are made from a composition comprising polypropylene, high pressure polyethylene or mixtures of these polyolefins the unoriented filaments having (a) a cross-section which consists of interconnected webs whose web length to web thickness ratios are at least 4: 1, or (b) a cross-section which is annular the radius to annular wall thickness ratio being at least 4 to 1. The filaments may have a cross-section which consists of interconnected webs, some of the webs having higher web length to web thickness ratios than the others so that the interconnected webs show unidirectional deformation when subjected to external stress. Preferably, the filaments have an overall cross-sectional area in the range of 0À010 to 0À400 sq. in. Brushes, and pillow and upholstery fillings, may be made from such filaments, which have better recovery characteristics than filaments of the same general configuration but different web length to web thickness ratios. Figures 1-9 (not reproduced) illustrate various filamentary forms. The filaments are made by known methods, a melt being extruded directly into water. Strains so introduced are relieved by annealing at elevated temperatures, e.g. 212 F. for high pressure polyethylene and 300 F. for polypropylene. Such annealing also assists in the production of completely straight filaments. |
