Summary:Novel compounds of the Formula I are prepared by reaction of a compound of the Formula II with an inorganic nitrate <FORM:1027967/C2/1> <FORM:1027967/C2/2> wherein R represents a hydrogen, chlorine or bromine atom or a trifluoromethyl group and Y represents a straight or branched chain C1- 5 alkylene group. 2 - Chloroformyloxyalkyl - 1,4 - benzodioxans of the Formula II may be prepared by reacting the corresponding 1,4 - benzodioxan - 2 - ylalkanol with phosgene in an inert liquid medium at preferably below room temperature. Therapeutic compositions with vasodilator and hypotensive activity, in the form of powders, tablets, capsules for oral administration comprise compounds of the Formula I and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
