Summary:The acetylene content of vinyl fluoride monomer containing up to 5 mol per cent of acetylene is reduced by selectively hydrogenating the acetylene to ethylene and/or ethane by contacting the gaseous mixture with at least the stoichiometric amount of hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, containing a Grou VIII metal on a catalyst support, for a time sufficient to reduce the acetylene content to less than 10 p.p.m. based on the weight of the vinyl fluoride. The crude vinyl fluoride may be prepared by the process described in Specification 1,064,276.
