Summary: | A process of peroxidizing linear, non-crystallizable polymers of alpha-olefins comprises subjecting an aqueous suspension of the polymer to the action of oxygen at 40 DEG to 200 DEG C. and under 1 to 20 atmospheres pressure. Polymers specified are derived from propylene, butene, methylpentene, hexene and mixtures thereof with each other or with ethylene. The oxygen may be air or an p oxygen/inert diluent mixture, and the water may contain surface active agents. The polymer may be swollen with an inert diluent. Graft copolymers may be obtained by treating the peroxidized polymers, preferably swollen in a solvent, with a monomer which is polymerizable by a free-radical mechanism, e.g. styrene, butadiene, isoprene or vinylidine chloride. The graft polymerization may be effected in water containing emulsifying agents, anti-foaming agents and colloids. In Example 6 the product of grafting butadiene on to an ethylene-propylene copolymer is stabilized with phenyl-b -naphthylamine and is vulcanized with the aid of stearic acid, zinc oxide, diphenylguanidine, N-oxydiethylene benzothiazole-2-sulphonamide and sulphur. Latices of the graft polymers are useful as paints, varnishes and sizes for fabrics. Specifications 810,023 and 856,733 are referred to. |
