Summary: | High molecular weight polyoxymethylenes are produced by polymerizing formaldehyde in anhydrous medium in the presence of an organic compound containing at least one azomethine group as catalyst. The catalyst may be an amidine, a guanidine, an isourea, an isothiourea, an isomelamine, an iminoether, a lactim ether, a hydrazone, a semicarbazone, a thiosemicarbazone, an azine, a Schiff's base or an oxime. A long list of specific catalysts is given. The anhydrous medium may be a solvent, e.g. cyclic and acyclic ethers, esters, cycloaliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, and halogenated hydrocarbons, specific examples being given. |
