Summary:A graphite nuclear reactor fuel element frame structure is impregnated with a compound of aluminium, barium, titanium, silicon, or zirconium, and heated to convert the compound to the carbide. The structure may for example be impregnated with a silicone, an alkali metal silicate, barium chloride followed by sulphuric acid, silicon from a silicon hydride, or titanium or zirconium oxide from the chloride.
