Summary:Polyhydroxylated, e.g. cellulosic or polyvinyl alcohol, textile materials are dyed or printed by applying an aqueous solution or paste of an azo dyestuff or a coupling component which contains at least one acid solubilizing group and at least one isothiocyanate group, fixing the dyestuff or coupling component by heating or steaming in the presence of a base, and when a coupling component is so fixed on the material, finally applying an aqueous solution of a diazotized amine. The base, e.g. an alkali-metal or alkaline-earth metal hydroxide or alkali-metal carbonate or phosphate, may be applied together with the dyestuff or coupling component, or may subsequently be applied in aqueous solution, and a substance, such as sodium bicarbonate, which yields an alkali on heating, may also be so-employed. The dyestuff or coupling component solution or the solution of the base may contain a neutral inorganic salt, e.g. sodium chloride. Examples of dyeing and printing are given. The isothiocyanate group, if not already in the diazo or coupling component, is introduced into any metal-free or metalliferous mono- or dis-azo dyestuff containing an amino group (many of which are specified) by reaction in aqueous solution at room or higher temperature with thiophosgene, the isothiocyanate being precipitated by addition of sodium chloride or sulphate.
