Summary:The invention relates to a membrane for proton conduction, made of a proton-conducting polymer for use in redox flow batteries. The polymer is sulfonated poly(ether ketone ether ketone ketone) (PEKEKK). The membranes are efficient, mechanically stable, oxidation-resistant in VO2+ with sulfuric acid, and exhibit long-term stability in the unblended state. The membranes can be used for several hundred to a thousand hours in vanadium redox flow batteries having black start capacity. Formula I, PEKEKK with a sulfonic acid group and an IEC of 1.73 meq/g.
