Summary:The invention comprises N-bis (p-dialkylaminoaryl)-methyl derivatives of primary or secondary aliphatic amines or of such amines having aryl or heterocyclic substituents attached to carbon, the alkyl groups of the dialkylamino radicals each having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, the aryl radicals being mononuclear and the compounds being free from chromophoric groups and from acidic groups having a hydrogen cation, and a process for making the derivatives by condensing together the appropriate bis (p-dialkylaminoaryl) methane derivative containing a reactive atom or group attached to the methane carbon atom and an aliphatic compound, which may have aryl or heterocyclic substituents, containing a reactive atom or group attached to an aliphatic carbon atom, one of said reactive atoms or groups being an amino group (or, in the case of the diarylmethane derivative, an imino group) and the other a replaceable atom or group which reacts therewith, and, where an imino group is used, reducing the product to the amino form. The derivatives turn a blue colour on coming into contact with acidic materials and are used in compositions for colourless carbon papers (see Group VIII).
