Fibres, films and other shaped structures of linear aromatic polyesters are dyed or printed by treatment with an aqueous solution of a salt of an acid sulphuric acid ester or acid phosphoric acid ester of a water-insoluble dyestuff which contains an esterifiable aromatically bound hydroxyl group, at an elevated temperature, e.g. 100 DEG C.-130 DEG C., and in the presence of an alkali-binding agent, such as formic or acetic acid or a tartaric acid dialkyl ester or a phosphoric acid trialkyl ester. Specified dyestuffs are of the azo, anthraquinone and dioxazine series, and mixtures of such dyestuffs with disperse acetate dyestuffs may also be used. Examples of dyeing and printing are given. Specified azo dyestuffs are those obtained by coupling diazotised 4-aminophenyl phosphoric acid ester with 2-hydroxy-naphthalene, or by coupling diazotised 3-aminophenyl phosphoric acid ester with 1-(21chlorophenyl)-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, or by coupling diazotised 2-chloro-5-aminophenyl phosphoric acid ester with 1-(21 : 31-hydroxynaphthoylamino) - 2 - methoxy - benzene. Specified anthraquinone dyestuffs are the acid sulphuric (or phosphoric) acid esters of 1-hydroxy-4-aminoanthraquinone or of 1 : 5-dihydroxy-4 : 8-diaminoanthraquinone and those obtained by hydrolysing the condensation product of 1 mol of 1 : 4-diamino-5-nitroanthraquinone or of 1 : 5-diamino-4 : 8-dihydroxyanthraquinone with 1 mol of 4-(chloroformyl) -phenyl-phosphoric acid dichloride. A dioxazine dyestuff is that obtained by hydrolysing the condensation product of 1 mol of chloranil with 2 mols of 4-(chloroformyl)-phenylphosphoric acid dichloride.
