Summary:A catalyst composition consists of kieselguhr mixed with phosphoric acid, which is then submitted to high mechanical pressure, formed into shapes and calcined. The calcined pieces may be finally treated with steam and dried. In examples, powdered kieselguhr is lightly mixed with pyro- or ortho-phosphoric acid at 100 DEG C., and the mixture submitted to a mechanical pressure of 10 to 15 Kg. per sq. in., by which the mixture assumed a brown vitreous appearance. The mass is then heated at 180 DEG C. to remove surplus moisture and formed into particles 5 to 10 mm. size., and calcined at 350 DEG C. in dry air for 5 hours. After a steam treatment at 2600 for 16 hours, the product is air-dried at 305 DEG C. and cooled. The product contains 60 to 80% of P2O5, some part of which is in the form of silico-phosphoric acid. The catalyst may be used to polymerized olefines to form motor fuels, for the alkylation with olefines of cyclic compounds, condensation and isomerization reactions.
