Summary:The method involves calculating an estimated oil temperature on the basis of a coolant temperature at starting of an engine and a period of time elapsed after starting of the engine. The estimated oil temperature is stored in a memory and continuously variable valve timing is controlled based on the estimated oil temperature. The estimated temperature is modified if a vehicle speed is greater than a predetermined speed. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for controlling continuously variable valve timing of a vehicle engine.
