Summary:A tool (2,20) inserted into first plastic tube (1) in first direction (ER1) maintains internal cross-section of plastic capillary tube(s) (4) to be connected to first tube in a direction (ER2) at right angles to it. An extractor tool (6) for removing tool spigots (20) from capillary tubes applies a force onto the tool (2) in the opposite direction to the spigot insertion direction (ER2). The tool extractor(6) is inserted between the inner wall of the first tube(1) and a tool(2) to be removed. Two or more rods(7) of the extractor are inserted between the tool and first tube(1) so that the spigots(20) lie between the rods. The rods are held in a common holder and a movable spacer slides along the rods to maintain a gap between them. Extractor rods have wedge-shaped ends to ease insertion between the first plastic tube and the tool. Spigot spacing corresponds to the distance between tubes. Each spigot has a length equal to at least one and a half times the thickness of the first plastic tube. Part of the tool is flexible and made of spring steel while areas around the spigots are rigid. A stop(5) at one end of the tool defines the tool position particularly in relation to its angle and/or its horizontal position. A support(3) is inserted into the first tube to retain the tool position. An independent claim is included for a process for joining plastic tubes to produce capillary mats which involves: a) insertion of a tool(2) into the first plastic tube(1) in a first direction(ER1); b) insertion of one or more spigots(20) of the tool into capillary tubes perpendicular to the first tube; c) connecting the capillary tubes to the first tube, preferably by welding; d) applying a force with a tool extractor to slide the spigots out(ER2) of each capillary tube.
