Summary:Production of 7-17C aliphatic alcohols comprises cobalt catalyzed hydroformylation of 6-16C olefins and oxidative decomposition of the active cobalt catalyst in the hydroformylation outlet by reaction with oxygen containing gases whereby all the process steps are carried out in the presence of water. A process for the production of 7-17C aliphatic alcohols comprises: (a) cobalt catalyzed hydroformylation of 6-16C olefins; (b) oxidative decomposition of the active cobalt catalyst in the hydroformylation outlet by reaction with oxygen containing gases; (c) separation of the mixture from (B) to form a cobalt salt containing aqueous phase and an aliphatic aldehyde containing organic phase; (d) distillation of the organic phase to form a low b.pt. fraction containing unreacted olefins and an aldehyde containing sump fraction and; (e) hydrogenation of the aldehyde containing sump fraction whereby all the process steps are carried out in the presence of water.
