Fiber reinforced, plastic sliding bearing preform manufacture involves compressing fiber reinforced preform while moving preform along its own plane to produce rubbing and /or sliding effect on material surface

A non-metallic, fiber-reinforced material(12) for a sliding bearing is prepared as a solid, semi-finished sheet or strip. The semi-finished preform is pre-compressed(F z) using a pressure applicator(6,8,10) acting perpendicular to the plane(E2) of the material. Simultaneously the preform is moved in...

Summary:A non-metallic, fiber-reinforced material(12) for a sliding bearing is prepared as a solid, semi-finished sheet or strip. The semi-finished preform is pre-compressed(F z) using a pressure applicator(6,8,10) acting perpendicular to the plane(E2) of the material. Simultaneously the preform is moved in a direction(Y) along the material plane which creates a rubbing and/or sliding effect(F y) between the material and the pressure applicator to enhance the friction, wear and fitting characteristics. Bearing material(12) is prepared at a thickness of 0.15-1mm, preferably 0.25-0.75mm and more preferably 0.5mm. The initially coarse structure and/or texture of the material is smoothed during pre-compression and becomes more uniform. Applied pressure(F z) is 8-50MPa, preferably 10-30MPa, more preferably 15-25MPa. Preform material movement(Y) during compression is parallel to the principal direction of the fiber reinforcement and the direction of movement is at =45[deg] to the principal direction of the fiber arrangement. Preform movement is at 10-30mm/sec. preferably 20mm/sec. Pre-compression and preform movement can be repeated several times until a required surface finish is achieved. The preform is then formed three-dimensionally to produce a sliding bearing. An independent claim is included for a sliding bearing manufactured as claimed from a formed preform and mounted in a sliding bearing housing.
