The method involves lane change detection in motor vehicles with data acquisition systems for motor vehicle movement variables. The variations of the movement parameters (delta, vy, y)against time and in accordance with predefined variables are investigated for agreement with patterns (32) that are characteristic of lane change processes. An independent claim is also included for an electronic controller for motor vehicles. Verfahren zur Spurwechselerkennung in Kraftfahrzeugen, die ein Datenerfassungssystem für Bewegungsvariable des Fahrzeugs aufweisen, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die zeitliche Entwicklung der Bewegungsvariablen (delta, vy, y) aufgezeichnet und nach vorgegebenen Kriterien auf ihre Übereinstimmung mit Mustern (32, 26) untersucht wird, die für Spurwechselvorgänge charakteristisch sind.
