Summary:An electrochemical machining electrode has a composite structure with an outer block of non-electrically conducting material in which one or more electrodes are embedded and part-exposed at one or more places on the block-end surface. The block material is e.g. ceramics, polymer concrete, glass, plaster or plastic. The embedded electrodes are of e.g. metal, graphite, carbon, electrically conducting polymers or fibre bundles. The electrodes are exposed as required by machining the block ends e.g. by abrasion, cutting, polishing or turning. An independent claim is also included for a process to fabricate the composite electrode e.g. by casting, injection moulding, laser sintering, multi-component injection moulding, casting polymer concrete, sintering ceramics, or a suitable combination of these processes following introduction of the electrical conductor into the appropriate form.
