Summary:The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of dinitrotoluene by reaction of mononitrotoluene with nitric acid in the liquid phase. The process is characterised in that the reaction is carried out in the presence of an inorganic and acidic solid comprising at least one component chosen from the group consisting of orthophosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, metaphosphoric acid, metal dihydrogenophosphates, metal hydrogenophosphates, metal orthophosphates and metal pyrophosphates derived from metals capable of forming cations carrying from 1 to 5 positive charges.
