Summary:PURPOSE: To obtain a herbicide excellent in selectivity, containing a 5-(substituted phenoxy)-2-nitrobenzaldehyde and a 5-(substituted phenoxy)-2 nitrobenzaldehyde diacetate. CONSTITUTION: This herbicide comprises a compound of formula I (X is H or Cl) and a compound of formula II in the ratio of (50:1) to (1:50), preferably (20:1) to (1:1) by weight. The mixture of the compounds is obtained by reacting 1mol of a 5-(substituted phenoxy)-2-nitrobenzaldehyde of formula III by using a nitrating agent comprising 4-11mol of acetic anhydride, 1.2-2.6mol of nitric acid and 0.1-2.8mol of sulfuric acid in the presence of a solvent (preferably dichloromethane) at a room temperature or a lower temperature and by separating from the reaction mixture by a wellknown method. A mixture of both the compounds in a desired ratio can be obtained by selecting the molar ratio of the reaction composition.
