PROCESS FOR PREPARING A CATALYST AND THE USE THEREOF FOR CONVERSION OF CHLORINATED ALKANES TO LESS CHLORINATED ALKANES

Prepn. of a catalyst contg. gp. VIII and gp. Ib metals on an inorganic oxide support comprises: (i) dissolving a mixt. comprising (a) an alkoxide precursor of the inorganic oxide, (b) a complex of a cpd. of the gp. VIII metal and a bifunctional complexant of formula A-(CHR2)a-Si(OR1)3 (I), and (c) a...

Summary:Prepn. of a catalyst contg. gp. VIII and gp. Ib metals on an inorganic oxide support comprises: (i) dissolving a mixt. comprising (a) an alkoxide precursor of the inorganic oxide, (b) a complex of a cpd. of the gp. VIII metal and a bifunctional complexant of formula A-(CHR2)a-Si(OR1)3 (I), and (c) a complex of a cpd. of the gp. Ib metal and a bifunctional complexant of formula B-(CHR2)a-Si(OR1)3 (II), in an organic solvent; (ii) hydrolysing the mixt. to form a gel; and (iii) drying the gel. a = 0-8; R1 = 1-8C alkyl; R2 = H or 1-4C alkyl; A = an electron donor gp. capable of complexing the gp. VIII metal; and B = an electron donor gp. capable of complexing the gp. Ib metal. Also claimed are the catalyst itself, and its use in the conversion of chlorinated alkanes.
