Summary: | 1350717 Citric acid MONTECATINI EDISON SpA 18 Sept 1972 [20 Sept 1971] 43109/72 Heading C2C Citric acid is prepared by reacting acetone with carbon dioxide at from 0 to 60 C. in a dipolar aprotic medium and with at least 4 mols. of a phenate per mol. of acetone, and reacting the resultant 3-keto-glutarate at from 0 to 10 C. with excess hydrogen cyanide, and hydrolysing the resultant cyanhydrin with excess sulphuric acid. The medium may be dimethylformamide, N-methyl-pyrrolidone or dimethyl sulphoxide. The product which may contain citramalic acid, may be separated by selective precipitation as a salt of calcium, barium or cadmium. |
