Summary:The invention provides a pretreatment method for adhesive coating capable of improving the adhesion between a metal and an adhesive to be applied afterward without the need of using any toxic heavy metal such as chromium, and also capable of improving the adhesive strength and adhesion durability between a metal and another member to be joined to the metal. The invention relates to a pretreatmentmethod for adhesive coating to a metallic material comprises the step (I) of treating a to-be-treated object with a chemical treatment liquid containing at least one zirconium-fluorine complex and/ortitanium-fluorine complex and the step (II) of coating the resultant object with a surface treatment liquid containing a hydrolytic polycondensation product from (A) at least one crosslinkable silanecoupling agent of the formula (1) or its hydrolytic polycondensation product and (B) at least one adhesion-promoting silane coupling agent of the formula (2) or its hydrolytic polycondensation product.
