Summary:Device for receiving banknotes, especially an automatic cash machine, has a container (14) for receiving a bundle of banknotes (16) and a separation mechanism (28, 30) for separating individual banknotes (32). Along one or more of the walls (18, 20, 22, 24) of the container (14) is a sensor arrangement (34, 36) for detection of foreign metallic bodies stuck to the banknotes. Typically sensors are coil arrangements that use inductive effects to detect metallic foreign bodies. Once foreign bodies are detected on the surface of a note bundle separation of notes is stopped or not even begun and a customer can be requested to check the notes for foreign objects.
