Summary: | The subject matter of the present disclosure relates to efficient multicast forwarding through a shared gateway switch in a multi-fabric network. A system for efficient multicast forwarding at a switch is provided. During operation, the switch can maintain a first tunnel having a first switch in a first overlay tunnel structure and a second tunnel having a second switch in a second overlay tunnel structure. The switch can operate as a two-fabric gateway. The system can obtain a first structure identifier and a second structure identifier from multicast control packets received via a first tunnel and a second tunnel, respectively. The structure identifier can uniquely identify the structure. The system can then store the first network address of the first switch and the second network address of the second switch in the data structure in association with the first structure identifier and the second structure identifier, respectively.
