Summary:Pasty processed ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) polymers, and processes for forming dense UHMWPE films from highly crystalline ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene polymers, are provided. The UHMWPE films described herein can be manufactured by: 1) compressing a dried porous UHMWPE tape, and then stretching at a temperature above the melt temperature of the UHMWPE polymer; 2) expanding, without compression, the dried porous UHMWPE strip at a temperature above the melt temperature of the UHMWPE polymer; or 3) expanding the dried porous UHMWPE tape at a temperature below the melt temperature of the UHMWPE polymer to form a porous film, followed by compressing the porous film at a temperature above the melt temperature of the UHMWPE polymer to form a dense film.
