Summary: | Molten carbonate fuel cell configurations are provided that allow for introduction of an anode input gas stream on a side of the fuel cell adjacent an inlet side of a cathode input gas stream while allowing the anode and cathode to operate under parallel and/or counter flow conditions. A uniform flow distribution across the anode or the cathode is achieved by diverting an input flow of the anode or the cathode into an extended edge sealing region adjacent to an active region of the anode or the cathode, and then using a baffle to provide a sufficient pressure drop, improved flow characteristics are achieved during parallel flow or counter flow operation. A second baffle may be used to create a pressure drop when an output flow exits from the active region into a second extended edge sealing region prior to exiting the fuel cell.
