The invention provides an overvoltage detection protection method for an electric vehicle, the electric vehicle comprises an inverter and a control module, the inverter comprises two switch modules, and the overvoltage detection protection method comprises the following steps: entering a protection mode when a bus voltage is higher than a voltage upper limit value, in the protection mode, the method further comprises the following steps: (a) when the bus voltage is higher than a voltage upper limit value, controlling one of the two switch modules to be short-circuited and the other to be open, and when the bus voltage is lower than a voltage lower limit value, controlling one of the two switch modules to be open. And (b) releasing the protection mode when the bus voltage does not rise to the voltage upper limit value in a specific time period after the bus voltage is lower than the voltage lower limit value. And (c) when the temperature of any one of the two switch modules is higher than the temperature upper
