An asset management system that automatically generates and updates tool data stored and used at the system for determining the presence or absence of tools or other inventory targets in the system. When the tool is newly added to the automated asset management system, the tool data can be automatically generated, and if characteristics of the tool and/or the automated asset management system change, the tool data can be updated.
