Summary: | A process for producing alumina from bauxite pre-processed by a process comprising calcination (2020) and leaching (2030), the pre-processed bauxite being characterized in that it has an ignition loss of less than 2.5 mass%, the process comprising the steps of: (a) processing (2120) the pre-processed bauxite with an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution having a temperature of at least 100 DEG C, the concentration of the sodium hydroxide aqueous solution is between 100g Na2O/L and 220g Na2O/L, preferably between 140g Na2O/L and 200g Na2O/L, more preferably between 155g Na2O/L and 190g Na2O/L, and more preferably between 160g Na2O/L and 180g Na2O/L; (b) separating a solid residue from the liquid phase (2130); (c) crystallizing (2160) the aluminum trihydrate by adding a seed crystal (2170); (d) separating the crystalline aluminum trihydrate from the liquid phase (2180); (e) calcining (2194) the aluminum trihydrate obtained in step (d) to obtain aluminum oxide (2196).
