A method of controlling an aerosol-generating system is provided. The system comprises: an aerosol-generating article comprising a marker, the marker being excitable by light to emit a light emission; and an aerosol-generating device configured to engage with and disengage from the aerosol-generating article. The device includes a light source for illuminating an aerosol-generating article engaged with the device, and a light receiver for receiving light emitted by an aerosol-generating article engaged with the device. The method comprises: illuminating an aerosol-generating article engaged with an aerosol-generating device by a light source so as to excite a marker to emit a light emission; the light receiver receives the light emission after the light source ends irradiating the aerosol-generating article; and analyzing the light emissions received by the light receiver to determine characteristics of the article.
